until denver this past week. in the highly polarized e lack or ituate environment. both campaigns have strategically been pealing repealing to the respective political bases. what's been unusual about the election cycle is most voters have picked sides early. we do our polling even as right after the conventions, it looks like the final weekend of the campaign. most voters know who they support. they tell us their they are firmly committed to the candidate and the number of undecided voters has been surprisingly very, very low. single digits. it's not about persuasion. it's more about mobilization both of the conventions were like that. i think in the next three or four weeks we'll see lot more. mobilizes folks to come out because of the early voting which started in so many states. the middle is shrinking. as far as these campaigns are concerned. bash is going to talk about shortly about how there is still a middle to america once you get beyond the campaign labels. but clearly those what drive strategy in campa

brian, is the report expected to give president obama a boost after this week's debate? i'm sure he's going to turn it that way. >> reporter: you know what, laura, looking at these numbers, i think you can call these an october surprise. this is what politicians hope and dream will happen. this is certainly an interesting turn of events here. we got the numbers we expected. let's look at them. expected 115,000, we got 114,000. that's not a barn burner. but the 7.8%, that is a drop from 8.1 to 7.8% unemployment. that is the lowest since the day president obama took office. that gives the president a chance to argue today that he has been slowly but steadily rebuilding on the economy. mitt romney, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to say the president hasn't been doing it enough, hasn't been doing it well enough and he could do it better. but this is a surprising number. the reason we have the sudden drop, we expected it to particular up a point. the reason it went down is because the july and august numbers have been revised upward pretty dramatically. we're talking ab

i think that is going to be an interesting dynamic the next 4.5 weeks. massachusetts is a good example from the republican perspective. president obama is clearly going to run well there. ken scott brown withstand the blue tide there? -- can scott brown withstand the blue tide there? right now, the democrats are doing well. you have a candidate in indiana who succeeded the incumbent in that the primary. he is a tea party candidate. that it -- i s a -- is a tight race. you have a solid republican candidates. i was in arizona about a month ago, where democrats are competitive. it shows that these races are still fluid. you can be undecided and we can say that the race for undecided voters started yesterday. it will still be a couple of weeks before they really engaged. i do not know if people vote in races like a chess game. i do think people pick and choose. one from aisle a, one from aisle b. one thing we have not talked about is the fundamental dissatisfaction americans have with government. president, senate, congress, and governor, how do they make th
